What is hip pain?
Hip pain is pain felt in or around the hip joint, where the thigh bone meets the pelvis. It can come from the joint and its cartilage, from the muscles, tendons and fluid-filled sacs (bursae) around it, or from nerves in the low back that send pain into the hip area.
Hip problems can start suddenly, like a strain while sprinting, or build slowly from overuse or arthritis. Pain can also travel to the groin, buttock, thigh or knee.
Because pain in the hip area does not always come from the hip, care starts with a full exam of your hip, pelvis and low back.
Hip pain symptoms and causes
What does hip pain feel like?
Hip pain can be aching, sharp, dull or throbbing, and it often changes with activity.
- Pain that gets worse with walking, running or climbing stairs
- Swelling, tenderness or warmth around the hip
- Trouble walking or putting weight on the leg
- Clicking, popping or a feeling that the hip is unstable
- Pain that travels to the groin, buttock, thigh or knee
- Weakness in the hip and thigh muscles
What causes hip pain?
Hip pain can start with a single injury or build over time.
- Muscle and tendon strains, often from sports or sudden movements
- Overuse from running, standing or repeated motions
- Arthritis that wears down the joint cartilage
- Bursitis, irritation of the fluid-filled sacs on the outside of the hip
- Low back or sacroiliac (SI) joint problems that send pain into the hip
- Risk factors: age, a past hip injury, extra body weight, long hours sitting
Is it your hip or something else?
Pain in the hip area can come from the joint, the tissues around it or the low back. Your exam helps tell them apart.
| Feature | Hip joint problem | Hip bursitis | Pain from the low back |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it hurts | Groin and front of the hip | Outside of the hip, over the bony point | Buttock and back of the thigh, sometimes below the knee |
| Other signs | Stiffness; trouble putting on shoes or socks | Tender to touch; hard to lie on that side | Numbness or tingling in the leg; low back pain |
| Often worse with | Walking, standing up and turning the hip | Lying on the sore side and climbing stairs | Sitting, bending, coughing or sneezing |

Hip pain questions we hear in Canton
Chiropractic care is a common conservative option for hip pain that comes from the muscles, joints or low back. We review your history and exam first and refer you to a physician if we find signs that need other care.
Yes. Problems in the low back or sacroiliac joint can send pain into the hip, buttock and thigh. That is why we check your low back and pelvis as well as your hip.
Hip bursitis is irritation of a small fluid-filled sac on the outside of the hip. It often causes pain over the bony point of the hip that is worse when lying on that side or climbing stairs.
Not always. Many people have painless clicking. Get it checked if it comes with pain, catching, locking or a feeling that the hip may give way.
[Confirm referral wording with practice] Imaging is ordered only if your exam shows it is needed, such as when arthritis or a fracture is possible.
